Mt. Panamao: An Enchanting Journey Through Biliran Island

Tucked away in the northern-most landscapes of Biliran Island, the Mt. Panamao offers adventurers a raw and unforgettable experience. Known for its lush mossy forests and mystical atmosphere, this mountain attracts nature lovers who seek the thrill of exploring an untamed paradise.

The Journey to Almeria

Our adventure began in Ormoc City, Leyte. A scenic motorcycle ride of just over an hour brought us to the iconic Biliran Bridge, a landmark that connects the islands of Leyte and Biliran. The panoramic view from the bridge was the perfect introduction to the natural wonders ahead.

From there, we continued to Almeria town, another 30-minute ride through winding roads flanked by greenery on the eastern part, and vast seas on the other side. A short 10-minute drive brought us to sitio Kabongasan, the jump-off point, where the true adventure began.

The Challenging Trail

The trail to Mt. Panamao was a test of endurance and determination. Unlike established hiking routes, this one was rugged and overgrown, requiring us to crawl through thick bushes and maneuver around thorny rattan plants. At times, our hands accidentally grasped these thorny plants, reminding us of nature’s unyielding wildness.

Adding to the challenge was the intermittent rain, which slowed our pace and left us covered in mud. Yet, these obstacles only added to the adventure, making each step toward the summit feel more rewarding.

Encounters with Wildlife

Near the camp, we were greeted by fascinating wildlife. A bright red mountain crab caught our attention, its color resembling that of a cooked crustacean. At a water refilling station, a tiny frog rested peacefully, seemingly unaffected by our presence. These small encounters brought moments of wonder and connection with the untamed environment.

Setting Up Camp

After nearly four hours of trekking, we reached the campsite. The day was windy and chilling, so we quickly set up our tent and prepared dinner to replenish our energy. The night brought a sense of serenity, with only the sounds of nature accompanying us as we drifted to sleep.

A Foggy Morning and the Summit Trek

The next day greeted us with a foggy morning. The thick mist obscured the view of Mt. Panamao behind us, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. We warmed ourselves with a comforting bowl of soup for breakfast, waiting for the rain to subside before attempting the summit.

At around 10 a.m., the rain finally eased, and we began our ascent. The 30-minute trek to the summit was enchanting, with mossy trees lining the path and adding a fairytale-like quality to the journey.

The Rewarding View

Reaching the summit was a moment of triumph. The viewing deck offered a breathtaking panorama of Biliran Island, with rolling hills, dense forests, and glimpses of the sea in the distance. The atmosphere was surreal, and the beauty of the surroundings made every challenge along the way worthwhile.
