Cagnituan Falls and Cave, Maasin City

There’s nothing more refreshing than dipping into nature’s own cold pool especially after a long, punishing run. And that day, we found the perfect place to cool down and recharge, in Cagnituan Falls and Cave, hidden deep in the green heart of Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

After finishing the first ever Maasin City Marathon, our bodies were begging for something cold and soothing. So we packed up and decided to explore this gem just outside the city.

From the city proper, we rode about 10 minutes to Barangay Maria Clara, then took a winding uphill road through Barangay Cagnituan for another 15 minutes. The ride itself gave us glimpses of lush hills and quiet village life.

We reached the barangay basketball court, which also serves as the jump-off point to the falls. Entrance fee is just ₱20 per person. From there, it was a short but fun 15-minute hike through a forest trail, just enough to awaken the senses without draining what little energy we had left.

And then, there it was, the Cagnituan Falls. About 15 meters high, pouring down into a wide, natural basin of crystal-clear water. The cold hit us instantly in the best way. The water was ice cold and incredibly refreshing, like nature’s own ice bath.

The area is surrounded by a thick jungle and tall limestone cliffs, giving it a very raw and untouched feel. It’s quiet here except for the sound of rushing water and the occasional bird call. You’d never guess a place like this exists just a few kilometers from the city.

There are also natural shallow pools downstream, perfect for kids and families who want to enjoy without worrying about deep waters. Some visitors were just lounging on the rocks, soaking up the tranquility, while others were climbing the sides and jumping into the pool below.

But the real surprise sits just above the waterfall, the Cagnituan Cave, the very source of the water. The cave is cathedral-wide, with towering ceilings and a cavernous interior. Sunlight pierces through some parts, creating beautiful rays across the damp limestone walls. You can feel the cool air coming out of the cave, and hear the gentle echo of dripping water. According to locals, the cave stretches further in, though you’ll need a guide if you plan to explore deeper.

Huge thanks to Klent and Marie for bringing me here. This place, both the falls and the cave feels almost magical. A hidden sanctuary that makes all the sweat, sore legs, and steep climbs absolutely worth it.

If you ever find yourself in Southern Leyte, especially in Maasin, make time for Cagnituan Falls and Cave. It’s not just a destination, it’s a refreshing reward.
